ROCKLAND, Maine — Four days after moving into the quarterfinals with a home prelim victory over Nokomis, the Viking girls’ soccer team saw its season come to an end last Tuesday as they fell 3-0 to top-rated Oceanside.
Caribou surrendered goals 1:15 apart midway through the second half, with Casey Pine scoring one and assisting Makenna Brooks on the other, to give the Mariners the 2-0 lead.
“We didn’t start out well and got outplayed in the first half,” said Viking coach Todd Albert, noting that Oceanside had the wind at their backs in the opening half. “We were able to get chances in the second half but were unable to break through.”
Caribou outshot Oceanside in the second half by a margin of 8-5 after being outgunned 14-1 before halftime. Still, the Mariners were able to tack on an insurance goal with 10:53 left, courtesy of Lily McVetty off a Brooks assist, to account for the final score.
Albert said it was still a successful season for the Vikings, who went 8-6 prior to the playoffs and finished eighth in the Class B North standings.
The team will graduate just three seniors — Eileen Patton, Jenna Boucher and Molly Adams — so will have plenty of experience back next year. One of the returnees is forward Maddie Doucette, who tied Caribou’s single-season scoring record with 24 goals, sharing it with former teammate Bria Judd.
The Washburn boys suffered a quarterfinal loss in Class D, dropping a 7-0 decision to Bangor Christian in a match held in Hampden.
The Beavers were outshot 25-7 and Tyler Welch scored three times and Luke Chandler had four assists for the defending regional champion Patriots.
Washburn, the No. 7 team in the division, finished with an overall record of 9-6-1, while Bangor Christian went on to defeat Ashland in the semifinals and will play Fort Fairfield in the finals this afternoon.
