Island Falls Notes

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Big Valley Snow-Club will host a hunter’s supper, to be held at the clubhouse on Rt. 2, serving from 5-7 p.m. The menu will include turkey stew, spaghetti, and ham and potato scallop — plus homemade biscuits and desserts.

Adults will be charged $7 and children under 12 $4, and as the club members have the reputation of being good cooks, I’m sure there will be a great turnout for this great occasion.

Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, drove down from Caribou just recently to spend some time visiting here in Island Falls with yours truly. As the weather nowadays is so uncertain, you have to visit when the opportunity is there. After a very nice visit Mary Lou and Jane returned home to Caribou, stopping in Smyrna for lunch at the Brookside on the way.

I actually saw a cedar waxwing sitting on a branch of my cedar tree and finally flying in to the feeder to eat the sunflower seeds there. I haven’t seen a cedar waxwing in ages and wished that I’d had a camera.

I have quite a few chickadees now that it is colder and finally had two blue jays arrive. I put out my peanut butter and lard mixture for them all and it sure disappeared fast.

I still have the deer family arriving to graze in my backyard just about every afternoon. They finally polished off the apples under the tree by my driveway, so now I am throwing out cut-up apples and old bread for them. I put it out by the barn late afternoon and it’s gone by the next morning.

One morning last week about 6 a.m. I looked out my big window and there were two deer, apparently asleep out near my flag pole. I watched them for about 10 minutes until they decided it was time to get up, and away they went into the woods nearby.

Ricker Rumblings

Hello, everyone! I’ve been absent for a few weeks. Please excuse my absence as I had a seven-day hospital stay. I’m trying to regain my strength but it is a slow process. Anyway, I am back on the job and happy to be there. Thanks be to God.

Had two trick-or-treaters on Halloween. They looked like a brother/sister pair with their parents. They took me by surprise, as usually we don’t get many “tricksters” here in the Plaza, but it is usually fun when they show up.

In the past I dressed up and made my own fun. What was your most memorable Halloween? I would like to hear it. Some of my classmates would cut the clotheslines, soap windows and other such tricks. None of that goes on today–more parties for the kids. I love it when the adult clerks in local stores dress up. It’s an added bonus.

Frannie Cunliffe, who lives near the ballpark, is home now after a bad fall in her bathroom sending her to the hospital for days and then to Madigan Estates for rehab. We are glad you are home, Fran, and nice to hear from you.

Saddie Carmichael passed out wrapped popcorn balls to her friends. Thanks, Saddie, for the treat.

Bonnie Lukehart, one of my neighbors, is a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital. Bonnie, we hope to see you soon.

One apartment is vacant on the second or third floor. A tenant moved Saturday to Presque Isle. Good luck and God bless to Cherie and Gary.

Harriet Garnett is home after being hospitalized several weeks ago. We are happy to see Harriet up and about Ricker Plaza. Harriet is always so gracious and pleasant.

My thoughts on angels: “We are more like angels when we stand ready to serve the good inside if us. Hello to some of my friends at the Madigan: Norma, Jean, Priscilla, Aileen, Mr. Richardson, and many more.

Have a great week; treat everyone with kindness and be good to yourself.
