CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou National Honor Society, an 88-year-old organization and the oldest operating student organization at Caribou High School, welcomed nine new members from the class of 2017 during their induction ceremony last Friday.

NHS Chapter President Maria Espinosa opened the ceremony with a speech before bringing Emma Belyea, Katelyn Clark, Madison Doucette, Samantha Fortin, Madeline Gudde, Heather LaMothe, Kaitlyn Nadeau, Julia Page and Rachel Soucy were to the stage and presented with robes.

NHS Adviser Kenneth Atcheson II presented each new inductee with an official pin before they stepped onstage.

“The NHS is more than just an honor roll society,” said Espinosa. “The NHS rules for membership are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership and service. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.”

In addition to welcoming new inductees, Shannon Sleeper was brought on stage and awarded the title of Honorary Adviser of the NHS. NSH member Ethan Plourde presented her with an adviser’s jacket and official pin.

“We are so very pleased to welcome Mrs. Shannon Sleeper as our assistant National Honor Society Adviser,” said Espinosa. “Mrs. Shannon Sleeper is a member of the Caribou Chapter of NHS and now she has graciously agreed to help out our chapter as an assistant adviser.”

Prior to the ceremony, students and faculty were treated to a chicken parmesan dinner. Atcheson Farms provided Golden Russet potatoes, and the CHS Culinary Arts Program, with help from Kathleen Bell, prepared dinner rolls and a selection of desserts. Sleeper’s Market and Noyes Flower and Plant Shoppe also assisted with the table settings as well as a donation of grape and fine dinner china and silverware.
