New varsity hoop coaches named at Ashland
ASHLAND, Maine — The Hornets’ varsity basketball teams will be under new leadership this winter.
Lucas Belanger and Whitney Flint will be the boys’ and girls’ head coaches, respectively, according to Mark Stanley, the school’s athletic director. Both Belanger and Flint are 2008 graduates of ACHS who played basketball and other sports at their alma mater.
Belanger, 25, has coached at the middle level and junior varsity for the past seven years at Ashland and serves on the district’s custodial and transportation staff. He replaces Trevor Hews, the squad’s coach the last four seasons.
The 25-year-old Flint returns after having coached the Hornet girls during the 2013-14 season. Flint’s team recorded a 6-12 record. She was also the JV girls’ coach for two years.
Flint is a physical therapy assistant at The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. She is filling the spot vacated by Cody Tompkins, who was with the team for one season and resigned after he was hired as the girls’ basketball coach at Central Aroostook High School in Mars Hill.
Tryouts will get underway Nov. 16.
