Island Falls Seniors

The Island Falls Senior Citizens met at the municipal building Nov. 5 with 13 members and three dinner guests in attendance.

After a delicious potluck lunch, music was provided by our own Rich Camire.  After this, our business meeting was opened by Rich. We discussed the deadline for Medicare change enrollment, and also after a discusion and vote, decided not to sponsor a scholarship for next year.

Members present were Mary Pipes, Edith Dwyer, Mary Lawler, Gloria Noyes, Donna Baker, Darrell Hartin, Paige Coville, Rich Camire, Louise Butcher, Terry Dwyer, Jeanne Clements, Ellie Peck and guests David Dionne, Jutta Beyer and  Patti Hartin.

The next meeting will be Nov. 19 with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, and we urge all seniors to attend and to join our group, or at least for a great meal and to find out what we are all about.

Island Falls Notes

Son, Tom, dropped in on Monday morning about 10:30 for an unexpected visit. He brought a friend, Florence, with him and we all had a great visit and then, following lunch, they took off for the long ride back to Glenburn after deciding to take Rt. 2 instead of I-95.  The scenery is much better and is sure not so dull, because going through the Nine Mile Woods you could always spot a deer or some kind of animal that might pop out of the woods at you.

I dropped in to see my neighbor, Charlene Webb, the other day. All is well there and she is planning on spending the winter here in Island Falls and perhaps moving to the Bangor area in the spring.

I am still going for a swim about four times a week at Vacationland Estates, even though most of the regulars have stopped coming and sometimes I am the lone person in the pool. Cooler weather keeps some away, I’m afraid, but the water is nice and warm and the hot tub is still available.

Judy Willigar and her daughters, Marsha Grant and Sheila Pelletier, come every Tuesday and Thursday if they have no other plans. We are all hoping the good weather  (meaning no snow!) will continue for a long time.

I put out some peanut butter and lard mixture on my cedar tree the other day and the birds — and, I’m sure, the gray squirrel — have eaten it all.

I have seen no deer in quite a few days and am hoping they elude any hunters that are out looking for them. The apples and bread I put out for them disappears, so maybe they arrive after dark.

TOPS

The TOPS meeting was held at the Aldergate building Nov. 13, with three KOPS and 11 TOPS members weighing in.

The loser of the week was Mildred Gagnon and the runner-up was Barbara Grant.

The incentive basket was won by Opal Adams.

Our fall contest ended this week, with five people tied for first place. Pam Richardson’s name was chosen as the winner.

The program was given by Brenda Lacostic on “Superfoods that Power You Up,” with 16 ways to improve your health. The tips were read by the attending members.

An article from the 1994 Houlton Pioneer Times was read, in which Charlotte became a KOPS member. The group congratulated Charlotte on providing such a great incentive.

Plans were made for the workshop in Washburn Nov. 1, and a new contest will begin on Dec. 4.

New people are always welcome; for more information, call Betty Ivey at 532-9653.

Town and Country Seniors

For the November meeting, members of Houlton’s Town and Country Seniors met at the SAV building for a Thanksgiving feast, wonderfully prepared and served by the Culinary Arts students.

The next meeting of Town and Country Seniors is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 12 noon at the Gentle Memorial Building, downstairs in the kitchen dining area. In addition to enjoying a potluck lunch, the group will be completing a service project for a deserving family this Christmas. We invite other seniors to join us for lunch and for a time to be with friends and serve others. For more information, please call 694-4546.

Happy Losers

On Nov. 11 the weight group called The Happy Losers held their weekly meeting. Jackie Pratt, the leader, opened the meeting and welcomed members, followed by the pledge and roll call.

Eleven members weighed- in and attended the meeting. Brenda Raymond lost the most weight for the week, and runner-up was Cecilia Brown. Great job, ladies. Reports for the week were given by the secretary and treasurer.

There was no program for the week, just weight discussion. Members decided to give donations to the Food Pantry in Island Falls and to the church.

All are welcome to the group, which meets every Wednesday at the United Baptist Church vestry in Island Falls, with weigh-ins from 8-8:30 a.m. The meeting usually starts at 8:30.
