CARIBOU, Maine — The American Legion honored the lives of all those who fought for their country during their Veterans Day Ceremony at the Caribou Honor Roll.
Roger Felix, Commander of the Lister-Knowlton VFW Post 9389, led all attendants in the Pledge of Allegiance before American Legion Post 15 Commander Wayne Little gave a speech about sacrifices made by those who served in the military.
“On this day, Veterans Day, we are acknowledging the service of veterans of our wars,” said Little, “and remember how men and women set aside their civilian pursuits, defending the freedom of mankind preserving our American heritage.”
Commander Little introduced Legion Auxiliary Representative Shelley O’Rourke to speak.
“Thank you all for your service to our country, the waging of a war involves more than just the combatants. the fighting forces begin at fireside and in the hometowns. The repercussions of war’s terrible brutality have chilled the hearts and dimmed the hopes and dreams of many left behind on the homefront. While the horrors of the battlefield may have not been our experience, we have lived with the terrifying loneliness created to answer an aggressor’s challenge.
“In waging war, we have moved forward with the unity of purpose which made us strong, forgetting pettiness, egotism, and pride. Our hearts beat in tune with those in other nations fighting for freedom and the dignity and opportunity of mankind. In our constant quest for an honorable world peace, there is need for unity of purpose if we truly are to move forward to a brighter tomorrow,” Rourke added.
Patricia Edgecomb, VFW Ladies Auxiliary President, recited a poem entitled — ”The Veterans” which described the powerful impact of America’s servicemen, and how the freedoms enjoyed in America are a direct result of their sacrifice.
