Eateries, patronsuse forks to battle cancer
Three local eating establishments recently took part in this year’s “Stick a Fork in Cancer” campaign, and donated 10 percent of sales during their specified times to the American Cancer Society through the annual Aroostook County Relay For Life.
Cindy’s Sub Shop in Caribou, the Mapleton Diner in downtown Mapleton and the Pizza Box in Presque Isle all participated. Local Relay For Life teams McCain Searching for a Cure, UMPI Owls and Butterflies For Hope thanked them for their generous support and involvement in the fight against cancer.
The Aroostook County Relay For Life committee members have decided to make this a yearly event, which will take place the first week of each November.
This was the first year that Maine and Vermont hosted this campaign. Restaurants were asked to participate during a time, which they selected, from Nov. 1-7.
“Stick a Fork in Cancer” was first hosted in Florida with great success. Money donated helps fund groundbreaking research and develop treatments to battle all types of cancer. It also funds programs that provide free comprehensive information and support to patients, survivors and caregivers on their website or hotline as well as several other programs.
The ultimate goal is to find a cure, but in the meantime, the American Cancer Society is able to provide treatment options for cancer patients so they can live longer and remain active in our communities.
The Relay for Life committee hopes to expand this campaign next year and looks forward to seeing how much it will grow with the future support of the community and local eateries.
