On Nov. 15, following the church service at Whittier Congregational Church, a name was drawn from the bowl containing the names of the many people who signed up for the Thanksgiving basket. The lucky winning ticket, drawn by Verna Boone, was held by Tammy McCarthy, a resident of Crystal who also teaches in Brewer, and is the daughter of Mrs. Catherine McCarthy. She attends the Whittier church and has often assisted in the church craft fairs and rummage sales.
I have recently visited with friends Gertrude Webb and Margaret Duffy, who now reside in Patten, and both enjoy hearing about the news from town and how the wildlife in and about my place is faring.
I am still going swimming at Vacationland Estates and plan to do so until the snow arrives. A few hardy souls are there, usually, so I am not alone.
I was talking with my friend, Merlyne Ryan, the other day and she tells me that she also has a few deer come to her yard and she has grain and other foods that she puts out for them so the deer in our areas are well taken care of.
I haven’t seen any deer close by lately but the apples and bread I throw out are always gone by daylight.
I was very happy the other day when I happened to look out my kitchen window about 6:30 in the a.m. and there was a male cardinal sitting in my cedar tree. After sitting there for a minute or two he flew down to my bird feeder and sat there for about two minutes eating the sunflower seeds. I have seen the female cardinal also, but she doesn’t linger too long—just eating for about a minute then flying off.
I have had Fred Anderson’s friendly coon cat visiting the barn and the territory nearby and was happy to see her. She patrols the whole area here and has kept us all free from any mice.
I am hoping to see more activity in my backyard once the deer hunting season is over.
