115 Years Ago – Nov. 21, 1900
Horses down — There’s been quite a number of horses that have gone down near the corner of Main and Water street, due to increasingly slippery roads. Most of the accidents haven’t been too severe until W.T .Barton’s heavy team from Perham, comprising four horses and a heavy wagon with a load of lumber, came along. The team nearly crashed into the plate glass windows of S.L. White’s drug store, but fortunately, the wheels struck rough ground and the wagon was bottom side up when it reached the store. No horses were hurt and the driver escaped with bruises.
100 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1915
Lighting improvement — The new system of street lights installed by the Caribou Water, Light & Power Company is a vast improvement. The lights now give out a great deal of illumination, the change being very noticeable.
Feature film — The great feature film, The Birth of a Nation, which is being shown in all the large cities, and which is meeting with such unprecedented favor and popularity, is booked at the Gem Theatre on December 23, 24 and 25., both afternoon and evening shows.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 21, 1940
Toyland opening — Just in time for Christmas, J.C. Penney’s Toyland toy basement store will be opening Saturday. This new area will be 2,500 square feet and devoted to toys only. It will also become officially one of the largest toy shops in the state.
Flight training — Ten Aroostook County students were winners of the CAA scholarships awarded at the close of the 72-hour ground school course. The flight training began on Wednesday morning at the Caribou Municipal Airport under the Civilian Pilot Training program. Flight instruction is provided under a government contract by the Island Crop Dusting Co.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1965
New weather building — A new building to house United States Weather Bureau personnel and equipment at the airport is now in the planning stage here. The present building has been occupied by the weather bureau for 25 years. The new building would have about 2,000 square feet of space, an increase of 8,000 square feet from the previous building.
Narrowly missed — A tractor-trailer operated by Ralph E. Wheeler, 21, of Presque Isle, clipped the utility pole at left and narrowly missed a house occupied by Dr. Charles Serritella and family on Sweden Street. The mishap occurred during the early stages of the Monday-Tuesday snowstorm.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 21, 1990
Santa coming to Caribou — The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) has reported that Santa has booked landing rights on Friday at the Caribou Municipal Airport. Santa should be landing around noon and will be escorted from the Caribou Fire Station via. fire treek to the Sweden Street Plaza. Rumors have it that Rudolph isn’t feeling well, so he has asked Maxwell Moose to help Santa on this trip.
Ribbon-cuttings — Four businesses in the Caribou area recently held ribbon-cutting ceremonies. They include Gervais Sound Center, Rhythms Music Volume I, both located in the downtown mini-mall, Estee Lauder Cosmetics and Fragrances inside L.S. Hall’s store on Sweden Street, and the Irving Mainway Food Store on Bennett Drive.
