School vacation fun
REMEMBER WHEN
by Guy Woodworth
Do you all remember when you were in school back in the day? Remember the times you sat looking out the window and thinking, “Man I will sure be glad when the Christmas Break comes up.”
I remember it all too well. In those days we had a lot more snow than we do today at the holidays. We had snow forts to build and toboggans to run down the hills. Some of us worked in the potato house for local farmers and then there was the skating rink.
In Mapleton, where I grew up, a farmer used to plow the snow off the ice on the mill pond in town. It was fun there but we had to climb up and down the banks of the stream and in those days they were quite steep. Depending on the temperature, you could hear the ice creak and that made for some fun as well.
If we were lucky enough to be there at night, someone would show up with an old tire or two and we would skate by the firelight and of course we could also warm up.
All too soon the break was over and we were back in school, looking out the window and waiting for the February break to come. Ahh those were the days … sadly now all we do is “Remember When …”
