Local players competing
for Husson basketball teams
BANGOR, Maine — Five former Aroostook County high school basketball standouts are members of Husson University basketball rosters this season.
Four play on Coach Kissy Walker’s women’s team, with Washburn’s Mackenzie Worcester and Joan Overman joining veterans Chandler Guerrette of Presque Isle and Victoria McIntyre of Mars Hill on the Eagles.
Freshmen Worcester and Overman were both four-time state champions at Washburn, while Guerrette, a junior, won two state titles during her playing days with the Wildcats. McIntyre starred at Central Aroostook High School and is one of only two seniors on the Husson roster.
The team had a 17-9 record during the 2014-15 campaign, including a 15-3 mark in the North Atlantic Conference which put the Eagles in second place. This year, Husson will be gunning for its first NAC title since 2011.
The team has played one game so far, against St. Joseph’s College Nov. 19, and will begin a four-game home slate on Tuesday, Dec. 1, with contests against UM-Farmington, Maine Maritime Academy (Dec. 5), Colby-Sawyer (Dec. 11) and New England College (Dec. 12) scheduled.
Mitchell Worcester of Washburn is back for his second year with Coach Warren Caruso’s Eagle men’s team. He is currently injured, but upon his return should aid the team with his ability to stretch defenses thanks to his long-range shooting ability.
Last year, the Husson men were 20-8 overall and 15-3 in the NAC, good for second place. The Eagles have already played Div. I University of Maine, along with St. Joseph’s College and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. The team plays four of the next five at home. taking on UM-Farmington Dec. 1, Maine Maritime Academy Dec. 5, Colby-Sawyer Dec. 11 and New England College Dec. 12 at Newman Gymnasium
