Our recent food drive to bolster the shelves of St. Mary’s food pantry went well! Many students and staff throughout the school donated items and collections taken by student council members at home basketball games resulted in a cash total of $218! Woo hoo and way to go!
Thanks to all who contributed, and a reminder that we plan to continue collecting food items through December, also. If you happen to hit a sale at a local store, please consider purchasing an extra item or two to help out the food pantry.
The students of Mill Pond recently participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude’s is one of the leading research hospitals helping to fight childhood cancers and other life-threatening diseases. It is estimated that this year, 15,780 children and adolescents in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer. That is the equivalent of 28 elementary schools!
Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent since it opened 50 years ago. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food. St. Jude freely shares its discoveries so that one child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.
The math-a-thon is a math-enrichment fundraiser with a real-world purpose. It helps students practice their math skills while providing the opportunity to help kids just like them. This year, 23 students participated and raised a total of $646! Thank you to all participants and to their sponsors. Your efforts and generosity will reap great rewards for some child…..somewhere!
On Monday, Nov. 30, and Tuesday, Dec. 1, parents attended conferences to receive report cards and updates on the progress of their student. This is the first year Mill Pond School is using a trimester grading system with the second trimester closing on March 4th.
Student Council members will begin selling Santa-Grams on Monday, Dec. 7. This year, the treat will be an assortment of Christmas Hershey Kisses along with a personalized card. The price per Santa-Gram will be $0.50 each and will only be delivered to students and staff at Mill Pond. This is an inexpensive and simple way to thank a favorite teacher, acknowledge a kitchen helper, cleaning staff member, bus driver, etc. Students may also make purchases to take home to be given to Mom and Dad or siblings. If you have any questions, please send a note to your child’s teacher and the question will be sent along to me.
Hoping you have all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving! With recent events in the news from around the world, we certainly have much to be thankful for.
