FATHER TO SON — Laurence Horten, left, of Horten Lumber Company, hands the keys to the lumber business, located at 15 Military Street, over to his son, Kent Horten. Kent says he’s been building up a complete line of interior and exterior construction materials ranging from cement foundations to chimney caps.

 

100 Years Ago – Nov. 24, 1915

Modern rural school  – The modern rural school, that is now taking its place along with silos, tractors, manure spreaders, milking machines, good roads and the automobile in progressive communities, is hard to recognize as the offspring of the old log schoolhouse and the schoolmaster who believed in the rule of the rod as a divine right.

     Kansas vs here –  Women who feel that their sphere of activity are circumscribed should go to Kansas. The law in Kansas prohibits women from few liberties that men enjoy.Because of many requests for information about the kansas laws for women, S.M. Brewster, attorney general has prepared a list of things that women can do in Kansas. Can keep her own name when she is married. A woman can wear men’s clothing without any restrictions except that she must not pose as a man. She can vote at every election.

75 Years Ago – Nov. 28, 1940

     Hot lunches – Blaine to serve hot lunches. Hot lunches will be instituted in the grade schools here beginning in December. As yet a dietician has not been announced, although there are several applicants. 

     Cash prize – Cash prizes will be awarded to dairymen in Maine dairy herd improvement  associations who show the greatest increase in production per cow in their herds in 1941 compared to 1940. First prize is $75, second prize is $60, and three or more smaller prizes will also be awarded.

50 Years Ago – Dec. 2, 1965

     Maine Bowl Game – John MacRae, general manager WABI AM-FM-TV, Bangor, has announced elaborate plans for the radio and television coverage of the University of Maine-East Carolina State Tangerine Bowl football classic on Saturday December 11. The history making sports telecast is a joint cooperative undertaking by all participating stations.

     Misfit – The public is cordially invited to attend a Youth Film entitled “Misfit”. This action-packed , feature length, dramatic , color motion picture filmed on location in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., tells of the teenage world of drag racing, teen hangouts, hootenannies, water skiing, bowling, baseball and fun on the beach.

25 Years Ago – Nov.  28, 1990

     Beauty – Did you see the beauty? The ice storm Monday caused many inconveniences, but there were no accidents. And on Tuesday morning, there were the most beautiful sights! The trees were laden with ice, sparkling with the sun shining through the various shapes, only Mother Nature can produce!

     Rotary auction  – Houlton Rotary Club held its 35th annual radio auction last week on WHOU raising over $11,000. The auction is the club’s major fund raiser and the proceeds are used to fund Rotary’s various local charities.
