SMYRNA, Maine — A New Limerick couple and their dog were injured about 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015 (Thanksgiving) when their van left Route 2, struck a tree and rolled over, according to Maine State Police.
The investigation determined that the driver fell asleep at the wheel, Trooper Chuck Michaud said in a press release.
Driver Donald Scott, 81, and his wife, Vera Scott, 78, both of New Limerick were traveling west on Route 2 when their 2005 Chrysler van left the road. The couple was trapped in the vehicle for some time before they could be removed, the release said.
The Scotts were transported to Houlton Regional Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Michaud said. The injured dog was taken to a veterinarian in Presque Isle by a Good Samaritan so it could be evaluated.
Speed was not a factor in the accident, he said. The Oakfield Fire Department and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, the release said.
