CASWELL — Ester Mary Caldwell, 89, left this world to meet up with her loved ones in Heaven on November 26, 2015 in Caribou. She was born in Limestone, July 7, 1926, the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie-Mary (Michaud) King.

Ester was raised and attended school in Limestone until she met and married a handsome young lad from Caswell, named Burton Caldwell. They were married on October 14, 1942 and made their home in Caswell. Their first child, Christina, died at birth, but they went on to have five more children. Ester loved her children very dearly and she loved cooking and making all of their clothes when they were young.
Every spring she would pick fiddleheads; in summertime she loved picking wild strawberries to make jelly, and in the fall she would head out to the fields to pick potatoes. Ester was a fantastic cook and we will miss her famous homemade French Fries, her Thanksgiving Stuffing, and all of the wonderful meals she prepared for every Holiday.
Ester was a lifelong member of the St. Louis Catholic Church in Limestone, where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne and the Daughters of Isabella. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She absolutely loved and adored them and enjoyed spoiling them. Even when she could no longer speak, she would smile and her eyes would light up when her babies came to visit.
Ester worked hard all of her life. She spent many years as an Avon Representative; she worked at Millers in Caribou, and for Birdseye both in Caribou and Presque Isle. Later in life she attended a program at UMPI so that she could begin a career as a PCA. She began to show signs of Alzheimer’s during that time and was unable to continue.
She is survived by five of her children, Priscilla Ann Miller of Fairfield; Robert Caldwell and wife Corinna of Caribou; James Caldwell and wife Lorella of New Sweden; Rosalind Caldwell of Fort Fairfield; and Patti Burgess and husband Stephen of Vinalhaven. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mitchell MacArthur, Michael MacArthur, Lillian Webb, Robert MacArthur, Valerie Potter, Sheree Inman, Christopher Caldwell, Nicole Bragdon, Jamie Kasarda, Annie Burgess and Benjamin Burgess, along with 27 great- grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Alice Matthews of Texas, and her Aunt Hope O’Bar (her mother’s sister) of Limestone. She was predeceased by her husband Burton, her daughter Christina, a great-granddaughter Jamie Lounsbury, and a great-great-grandchild Liam Potter, her brothers Arthur and James King, and her sister Blanche Helstrom.
Friends called at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday December 1. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the Parish of the Precious Blood St. Louis Catholic Church, Limestone at 11 a.m., Wednesday. A time of continued fellowship and refreshments will be held in the parish hall following the service.
