CARIBOU, Maine — A U.S. Postal Service employee managed to save the mail and escape injury last Wednesday morning after the delivery truck he was driving caught fire.

The postal carrier, whose name was not available, was driving on the East Presque Isle Road at about 9:30 a.m. when a fire sparked in the engine compartment, according to Cpt. Michael McCarthy of the Caribou Fire Department.

The truck was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived, McCarthy said.

“The postal carrier already had all of the mail out of the vehicle,” the captain said. “He saved everything.”

     The driver was not injured.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the Dec. 2, 2015 blaze quickly, but the mail truck was destroyed, McCarthy said.
