100 Years Ago – Dec. 8, 1915
Barns, not a lost art — There is no immediate danger of farming in Maine becoming a lost art when our farmers find it profitable enough to warrant putting up $5,000 barns. A $5,000 barn is not much of a novelty in Aroostook County, a new farm at Davidson has a barn which cost about $10,000, while in Presque Isle has one that cost in the neighborhood of $10,000.
Gasoline tax — The old question as to whether gasoline is a luxury or a necessity is certain to come before Congress this Winter. Secretary McAdoo has set forth among other revenue proposals, the suggestion of a gasoline tax. This promises to be one of the most unpopular measures the administration can adopt.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 5, 1940
Christmas gifts — Fishman’s Christmas Gifts. What 10 cents will buy: Men’s fancy hose, boys ties, picture puzzle (300 to 500 pieces), colored rubber dolls, toy drum, musical top and even American mixed hard candy.
Gift of movies — With the Christmas shopping season now in full swing, the manager of Temple Theater comes through with a novel idea in Christmas gift suggestions that promises to solve many problems for perplexed shoppers. It is the new Movie Check Book now on sale at the box office. Available in inexpensive $1.10 and $2.50 denominations, the books contain coupons which may be exchanged for admission tickets to all M&P Theaters in New England.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 9, 1965
Candy stripers honored — The Candy Stripers, who had donated their times during the past two years to replace adult volunteers in work at the coffee shop of the Aroostook General Hospital, were honored at a tea Saturday given by the Aroostook Hospital Free Assembly.
Poor handwriting — One of the biggest problems postal employees face is illegible handwriting. At Christmastime, when mail wolves skyrocket, this can become a major problem. Another significant problem is the number of parcels delayed or actually undelivered because of poor wrapping or packing.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 14, 1990
Snowfall — The first significant snowstorm of the season hit the Shiretown buried lawns and gardens under four-to-six inches by noon Tuesday, with forecasts hinting that up to another six inches might fall before the storm ended Tuesday night.
Fiddler on the Roof — Houlton High School Music Department will present the musical, Fiddler on the Roof at the Houlton High School Auditorium. Date: Dec. 7, 8 and 9. Admission is $4.
