Erik Nyborg Sorensen

PRESQUE ISLE – Erik Nyborg Sorensen, 86, passed away December 1, 2015, peacefully at home. He was born in New Denmark, Canada, on February 26, 1929, son of Christian and Johanna Sorensen. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Jensen) Sorensen, of nearly 67 years, the love of his life.
Erik attended schools in New Denmark, Canada. He married Irene Jensen, moved to Presque Isle, and worked as a carpenter for his uncle. He formed his own building contractor company in May of 1959 as Sorensen Building Contractors, later known as Erik N Sorensen, Inc. The company dealt primarily in new home construction and remodeling as well as various commercial construction. Whether a customer or employee, one would tell you that Erik was a perfectionist and artisan with his work. He had to have every detail of the construction performed precisely to the customers’ desire and perfectly, or it would be redone. He built over one hundred homes throughout Presque Isle and northern Aroostook.
Erik’s passion was fishing, and he loved hunting in his later years. Some of his many fishing trips were with his good friend Dr. Raymond Giberson to the Arctic. He enjoyed many hours of fishing, hunting, and having good humor and laughter with his long time best friend, Joey Seeley. Joey’s son, Tyler became a special addition to the team. His most memorable fishing adventures were with his wife, daughters, and later their husbands and grandchildren. The family always spent much time together boating, water skiing, snowmobiling and skiing. He loved spending time during the summer weekends at their cottage with the family. Erik was a championship ski jumper and instructor at the Quoggy Jo Ski Club in Presque Isle and at the New Denmark Ski Mountain during the 1960’s.
Erik is survived by his wife, Irene; three daughters: Judith (Judi) Smith and spouse, Harlow Smith of Presque Isle, Alanna Stetson and spouse, John Stetson of Holden, ME, and Corinna Grant and spouse, Kenneth Grant of Presque Isle; nine grandchildren: Erik Smith, Jared Smith, Nathaniel Stetson, Sarah Stetson, Rebekah (Stetson) Campbell, Daniel Stetson, Austin Coffin, Tyler Coffin, and McKenzie Boyd; and 11 great-grandchildren: Carter Smith, William Smith, Brandon Smith, Connor Smith, Jahaan Stetson, Imana Stetson, Ava Stetson, Jericho Stetson, Kaylix Campbell, Isabella Coffin, and William Coffin, all of whom were his delight and joy. He is also survived by a brother, Ingeman Sorensen of Mapleton and his long-time dear friend, Joey Seeley.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Alice Bolinger, and Anna Lisa Christiansen; and brothers, Alfred Sorensen, Jens Sorensen and Nyborg Sorensen, all of Canada.
Friends and family called from 12 to 1 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2015, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church Street, Presque Isle, where funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. officiated by Pastor Christopher Dare of the Grant Memorial Church.
