PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The sole occupant of an apartment building escaped an early morning fire Sunday that significantly damaged the structure on Centerline Road.

The individual got out and called 911 at about 3 a.m. after a smoke detector went off, Capt. Vince Baldwin of the Presque Isle Fire Department said in press release issued Monday.

Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire and save the majority of a large apartment the individual lived in, but the two small vacant apartments received heavy damage, Baldwin said.

Firefighters also were able to save many personal items and even Christmas gifts for the occupant, who was not identified, according to Baldwin.

The captain said the Presque Isle department was assisted by firefighters from Easton, who helped fight the fire, and from Caribou, who provided station coverage. Crews were on the scene nearly seven hours, he said. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Baldwin.

The Aroostook County branch of the American Red Cross was notified to assist. Anyone looking to provide donations can contact the Red Cross.
