1940: Santa plans air flight around County

115 Years Ago — December 12, 1900

Christmas trip — For the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the C.P. railway will sell excursion tickets at one way fare for round trip to points on their line in Maine and New Brunswick and west as far as Montreal, from Dec. 21 to Jan 1, good to return until Jan. 4.

Jerusalem — 60 people from Presque Isle and a good delegation from Fort Fairfield, Washburn and Ashland were among those privileged to listen to Judge Mery’s description of his trip to Jerusalem, given in Masonic hall last Friday evening.

100 Years Ago — December 10, 1915

Collins Pond — Several young people were skating on Collins Pond this past week.

Special train — There will be a special train over the B. and A. to Fort Fairfield on Wednesday, Dec. 29 on account of the two big basketball games with which will be played at the rink in that town.

75 Years Ago — December 12, 1940

Airport project on schedule — Nearing the preliminary work of building offices, men’s quarters and a repair shop, the WPA project at the Caribou Municipal Airport is expected to get into full swing in approximately a month’s time, according to Olin Morse, supervisor of the project.

Santa to make air flight — Once again this year, Santa will be making a flight over Caribou and surrounding towns on Friday, December 20. Santa will distribute Christmas greeting cards, entitling holders to free gifts from Caribou merchants. It is expected the plane will be lighted with a cross as in former years.

50 Years Ago — December 10, 1965

Colorful — The Christmas shopping season in Caribou has been enhanced this year by the addition of hundreds of colored lights linked from building to building across Sweden Street. The Chamber of Commerce hopes to install many more lights in the years to come, filling a void that has been evident for several years.

Gidget Goes Hawaiian — Gidget lovers rejoice! The movie, “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” is being adapted as a play and the Caribou senior class will be present its annual play before what is expected to be a capacity audience. Curtain time will be 8:00 in the high school auditorium on Friday and tickets may be purchased at the door.

25 Years Ago — December 12, 1990

Ribbon cuttings — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday to mark the grand opening of the Colby General Store, located on the Colby Road in Woodland. Also opening on Main Street in Limestone was the Coin Shoppe.

 

Traffic stopper — A porcupine was sunning himself in an apple tree on Sunday in Woodland. The porcupine caught the attention of many passing motorists.
