Pet Talk

What a busy time of year it is. We are all out buying Christmas trees, hanging up lights, mailing cards and buying that turkey. It is a festive time of year, where it doesn’t matter what has happened throughout the year. What matters is not what we have, but what we can give to others. And that shows here more than ever this time of year.

We have received hundreds of packages in the mail and through UPS, filled with litter, food, bleach and cleaner. Every day the mailbox is starting to fill with Christmas cards, containing pictures of our alumni and donations for the holiday season. All of this is so helpful right now, as we are filled to the capacity with cats and have four dogs that have all been with us over eight weeks.

When our cat rooms are full, which right now they are, we are feeding over 40 cats. We are scooping over 40 litter boxes and washing over 40 blankets a day. That is a lot of litter, food and laundry soap. When our cat rooms are full, that’s a lot of cleaning with kennel cleaner, a lot of sweeping and mopping, which our employees are doing seven days a week.

It’s a never ending job, which we love doing. But we cannot do it without your help. The things we use to do our daily routine are not free to us. We rely on you to donate them or we buy them with your financial contributions. We may get 10 bags of litter in one week, but that only lasts us 10 days. We may get 20 bottles of bleach in two weeks, but that only lasts us two weeks. These items are always needed, and so we are hoping you will remember that this holiday season.

We know money is tight for everyone, especially right now. But even a $1 bottle of bleach is a huge help. Even a $3 bag of litter is a tremendous help right now.

So if you are out and about this holiday season, shopping for your loved ones, please remember the animals at Houlton Humane Society. We would greatly appreciate it.

Happy Holidays to all!
