Brewer to retire after serving with the district for 14 years
CARIBOU, Maine — The year is coming to a close and the RSU 39 school board announced a number of staff changes during last week’s meeting.
Superintendent Timothy Doak explained the educational background of Tammy Lothrop, who was nominated for a position at Caribou High School’s Transition Center as a coordinator specialist.
“Tammy is a Caribou graduate and worked at SAD 27 for about five years as an academic success coach, which is very similar to the open position at the Transition Center. She comes to us with a master’s in social work. She has done a lot of home visits, and has experience working with kids who were not academically successful in schools.”
Upon hearing the Superintendent’s description, the board moved to hire Lothrop for the position.
Doak also read a retirement letter written by Lois Brewer, who has worked as an administrator for the district for nearly 14 years.
“I can honestly say, in the time I’ve been here, the transition here has been wonderful because of Lois,” said Doak after reading the letter. “A lot of times I would ask her a about something I didn’t really have a historical basis for, and she was always there to help.” “It is with mixed emotions that I write to you to declare my intent to retire at the end of the school year,” said Doak as he read from Brewer’s letter. “I’ve had great pleasure working with the Caribou School Department as principal of Teague Park from 2002 to ‘09 and as an Assistant Superintendent from 2009 to the present. I want you to know how fortunate I’ve been. I know I’ll miss you and the work that I do and the wonderful colleagues I’ve had, but it’s time for me to retire and have a new pathway.”
“I will say that Lois is one of the most positive people I have met in my life,” said school director Ron Willey.
RSU 39 Chairman John Sjostedt also presented board member Kent Forbes with a plaque, which honored the time he served as a member of the school board. Forbes served on the school board for 15 years, and as chair and vice chairman on numerous occasions. Additionally, Forbes is involved with committees such as Budgeting, Negotiations, Dropout Prevention, Tech Center Draft, Building Bridges, and New School Construction.
New hires in the school district who were announced during the Dec. 16, 2015 meeting include Chelsea Leighton as JV boys basketball coach in Limestone Community School, Paul West as the JV girls coach at Limestone Community School, and Thomas Beckum as wrestling coach at Caribou Middle School.
Evan Graves transferred from the position of assistant Nordic ski coach to the head ski coach at Caribou High School, which is a one-year appointment.
The board also reported that Katie McDuff resigned as Middle School girls soccer coach for Limestone Community School.
