HOULTON, Maine — With just a few days remaining before the red kettles are stored away until next Christmas, Salvation Army officials are hoping that a late surge in donations will help them meet their kettle goals.
In Houlton $30,420 has been raised to date, 60 percent of this year’s goal of $50,000. Red Kettle funds are critical for programs and assistance for those in need in the communities we serve during the holidays and throughout the year.
Money raised through the kettle program supports year-round programs such as after school programs, music, social development programs and summer camping.
The red kettle has been a longstanding tradition with The Salvation Army and, indeed, an endearing sight across the country during the Christmas season. Dating back more than 125 years, the kettle has been an important source of revenue in addition to being an iconic symbol of the holidays.
