MADAWASKA, Maine — The Nordic ski season got going Thursday, with all the County teams making the trip north to the St. John Valley to compete.

Kassandra Nelson led Ashland with a time of 19:29, which was good for 19th overall, while Sarah Watt of Fort Fairfield was 21st in 19:34.

A total of 41 boys and 30 girls competed during the afternoon event.

The lack of snow and unseasonably warm temperatures has caused the cancellation of the first alpine meet of the season, which was scheduled for this Saturday. The meet was originally slated to take place at Bigrock in Mars Hill and was changed to Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent, but neither venue has viable conditions to host.
