Warriors hand Beavers first loss in three seasons

 The young and scrappy Southern Aroostook girls basketball team continues to impress on the hardwood. The Warriors (4-1) handed Washburn its first loss in three years Dec. 16, 2015 and with that win, moved into first place in the Class D North region.

Also in Class D North, Katahdin has secured a number of key wins of late, including a big victory over Fort Fairfield Monday evening that put the Cougars second in the region. It was Fort Fairfield’s first loss on the year. The Tigers compete in the Class C North region.

East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian is 3-3 in Class D North and currently ranked seventh.

Hodgdon (0-4) has played competitively in a number of games but is still looking for that elusive first victory. The Hawks are ranked 17th in Class C North.

Houlton (4-1) fell for the first time on the season (see accompanying story) and is now third in the Class B North region.

The following is a recap of games played Dec. 15 through Monday evening.

Fort Fairfield 49, Katahdin 57 — at Stacyville Monday, Georgia Landry led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points to propel Katahdin past Fort Fairfield. Molly Cunningham added 16 points and Courtney Stevens had 15.

For the Tigers, Taylor Churchill led the way with a game-high 23 points while Chelsey Pelkey added 12 points. It was Fort Fairfield’s first loss of the year.

Van Buren 24, East Grand/GHCA 61 — At Danforth Saturday, Sarah Stoddard poured ≠≠in 34 points to power East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian past Van Buren. Haleigh Shay and Kim Stoddard added 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Vikings.

For Van Buren, Emma LaJoie and Mykayla Bresett each netted eight points each.

East Grand led 12-4, 36-9 and 53-15 at the quarter breaks.

East Grand 49, Hodgdon 48 — At Hodgdon Friday, East Grand’s Sarah Stoddard led all players with 20 points as the Vikings held off a late surge from Hodgdon. Shay added 14 points for the Vikings.

Leading Hodgdon were Sydney Howell, with 16 points and Janelle Goff and Taylor Desrosiers tallied 10 and nine points, respectively.

East Grand led 10-6 in the first quarter, but Hodgdon rallied to tie 17-17 at halftime. East Grand led 33-30 after three periods.

Stearns 59, Katahdin 50 — At Stacyville Friday, Emma Alley poured in 23 points to propel Stearns to the win over Katahdin. Jessica Girsa added 14 points and Peighton Ingersoll contributed 10.

For Katahdin, Courtney Stevens led the Cougars with 11 points, while Kaycee Cintron, Molly Cunningham and Natalie Rickards each added 10 points.

So. Aroostook 67, Washburn 60 — At Washburn Dec. 16, the young Southern Aroostook Warriors ended a 40-game win streak for the Beavers. Washburn had not lost a game in nearly three and a half years.

Kassidy Mathers and Sydney Brewer led Southern Aroostook with 21 points apiece, while Kylie Vining added 14 points.

For Washburn, Emilia Churchill tossed in a game-high 25 points, followed by Laina Mette’s 15 points.

Machias 39, East Grand 27 — At Danforth Dec. 16, Tate Dolley poured in 27 points to propel Machias to the win over East Grand.

Haleigh Shay led the Vikings with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Sarah Stoddard added five.

The two teams were knotted at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Machias went up 15-11 by halftime and led 24-18 after three stanzas.

Katahdin 35, Schenck 58 — At East Millinocket Dec. 16, Kayla Falone scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Schenck past Katahdin. Chantel Lane added 13 points and Anna Sewall chipped in with 11.

For the Cougars, Molly Cunningham netted 15 points, while Georgia Landry chipped in nine and Natalie Rickards added six.

Schenck led 22-14, 29-18 and 45-26 at the quarter breaks.
