CARIBOU, Maine — Despite receiving above average snowfall for December, Caribou will break its record for the warmest December since statistics have been consistently reported.
Forecaster Todd Foisy notes that temperatures have been abnormally high this month.
“We are going to end up with the warmest December in Caribou this year,” said Foisy. “Since the month isn’t over, we don’t know how much we will beat the record by, but we will beat it.
“Ironically enough, Caribou is above average for snowfall this month. As of December 28, we are at 20.8 inches, and the average is 19.6 inches so we are already 1.2 inches above the average. The warm temperatures keep melting the snow, but more is on the way for the end of the month, so it looks like winter has finally arrived,” he added.
Caribou came very close to hitting the record high for Christmas Eve this year.
“The record high for Christmas Eve is 48 degrees, and this year we missed it by one degree,” said Foisy. “What was interesting about that day is that the highs occurred in the evening. The temperature spiked up into the upper 40s around nine or 10 in the evening. It wasn’t enough to break the record, but it was certainly unusual.”
Though Caribou barely managed to have a white Christmas, many other areas in New England have not received any snow.
“Something interesting to note is that we’ve been hogging all the snow for New England,” concluded Foisy. “There was little to no snow in areas like Bangor, Portland, and Boston this month.”
