Caribou squads swept by Houlton last week

Tuesday’s snowstorm has forced some changes to Caribou’s varsity basketball schedule.

The Viking teams were supposed to host Ellsworth Tuesday and Mount Desert Island today, but CHS Athletic Director David Wakana announced yesterday morning that the games have been moved back with adjusted times.

Caribou will now play MDI tonight, with the girls’ game beginning at 6 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 7:30 p.m. Ellsworth pays a visit Thursday. The girls’ varsity game is at 11:30 a.m., while the boys will play at 2:30 p.m.

It is part of a very busy week for the Vikings, who also host Orono Saturday afternoon.

The Caribou squads were swept at Houlton last week. The girls were beaten Dec. 22 by last year’s Class C state champion Shiretowners, 66-24. Kolleen Bouchard was too much to handle for the Vikes as she posted 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Searra Herbert scored seven points and Gabrielle Marquis six for 1-3 Caribou.

The following night, the Houlton boys posted their first victory by stopping the Vikes, 44-37. Garrett Ring and Jacob Brown scored 12 points each for the Shires, while Donovan Savage had 21 and Ricky Sheldon followed with six for Caribou, which currently holds a 1-3 record.

The Fort Fairfield teams played a home-and-home series with Madawaska and came away with victories in all four games. The boys are now 4-3 after they won last Wednesday on the Owls’ home floor, 61-27, and then took Monday’s home game, 55-26. Chris Giberson was the leading scorer for the Tigers in both, with 17 and 14 respectively.

The FF girls ran their record to 7-1 after claiming a 58-47 road win and a 65-47 triumph at home over the Owls. In the most recent win, Taylor Churchill had a career-high 31 points Monday, while Chelsey Pelkey registered a statistical triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

The Washburn squads were in St. Agatha Monday afternoon for a doubleheader against Wisdom. Jarrett Olson’s 27 points led the Beaver boys to a 79-46 win, while the Washburn girls were defeated, 48-27, as Rhylee Wright netted 17 for the Pioneers and Laina Mette’s six points were tops for the Beavers.

The Washburn boys are now 5-1 and the girls stand at 3-2.

The Limestone-MSSM teams have been off since before Christmas and next play at Central Aroostook in Mars Hill Saturday, with the girls’ game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys’ at 7 p.m.
