City council swears in new members

CARIBOU, Maine — City Council welcomed new members and elected positions for the new year during their Jan. 4, 2016 organizational meeting.

Caribou City Clerk Jayne Farrin swore in newcomer Timmy Guerrette along with incumbent Phillip McDonough II to the council. Guerrette is a lifelong member of Caribou who worked for the city’s fire and ambulance department for 24 years. During last year’s election, Guerrette won nearly half of the city’s votes, despite running against two others.

McDonough II has served the city council along with the Nylander and Planning boards at various points in his career since 2005.

Farrin also presented Mayor Gary Aiken with a tub containing the names of everyone who registered their dog with the city before 2016. Caribou residents who purchased their dog license before 2016 were entered into this contest, where they could win a $50 gift certificate to the vet of their choice. Farrin announced that the winner was Cathie McBreairty (and her dog “Gus.”)

Mayor Aiken also introduced Jim Chandler as the city’s new assistant manager.

Collectively, the council re-approved Aiken as mayor for 2016 and David Martin as deputy mayor. Council also established that meetings in 2016 will take place on Mondays at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, with the next meeting occurring on Monday, Jan. 11.
