100 Years Ago – Jan. 5, 1916
Thank you — The Salvation Army wishes to thank the public for the generous donations for the Christmas dinner and Christmas tree for the children. We sent out 31 bags of chickens and groceries, 31 bags of vegetables. These bags contained enough food for 340 meals. We had a Christmas tree for the children Friday: 59 dolls, 75 toys, also candy, nuts, popcorn and oranges.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 2, 1941
500 Tons of ice — John Webb, 83, who has delivered ice in Island Falls and Oakfield for a number of years, can harvest and house the product in a very brief period. He has been assisted in recent years by his son, Walter. In one and a half days, 500 tons were cut and housed. Three pairs of horses, a car, a truck and 40 men were engaged in the process.
Grand reopening — The beautiful new Houlton Theatre, located in Market Square, Houlton, Maine will have its gala opening. We are proud to present as our feature for Tuesday and Wednesday “Love Thy Neighbor” starring Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Mary Martin and Verree Teasdale.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 6, 1966
Courses — Ricker College is offering 11 new courses in the winter semester of its Loring Air Force Base residence program. The Ricker College base residence program is open to military personnel and civilians who have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
Fiftieth — Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Gardner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday with a family dinner party at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Harris Roberts.
25 Years Ago —Jan. 3, 1991
Magnavox winner — Dave Brown, manager at Dunn Furniture Company, presented Deborah Quint of Limestone with a Magnavox home entertainment system she won during a Christmas promotional drawing at the store.
Performance — The Patten Schools will present the Portland Wind Trio at the Katahdin High School cafeteria. The group, composed of Ardith Freeman, Alison Hale and Tom Parchman, has been performing for both adult audiences and children since 1983. The performance is in conjunction with the Patten Schools’ Innovative Grant Program “Monet, Debussy and Me’ which exposes elementary children to artists and musicians.
