School vacation time
REMEMBER WHEN
When I was in school, New Year’s Day was the day when we just knew we would soon be back in the prison they called “school.”
We knew that the end of time off was almost over. Not really though as sometimes it can get boring with all kinds of time on your hands and nothing, seemingly, to do.
I knew better than to tell my dad I had nothing to do as he could be in the middle of the rotunda at the White House and still find things to do.
One thing most people do on New Year’s Eve is make resolutions as to what they will or won’t do for the coming year. Take my word for it, resolutions are never kept.
I remember the first time I asked my youngest son if he had made any resolutions for the coming year. He was only 4 or 5 years old, and he said “Dad what is revolutions?” I knew then the frustration that parents go through with little ones who aren’t ready for the questions we ask each other.
I will, however make a resolution to you all right this very minute while I am writing this column. I resolve to be more proud of my sons and grandchildren in the coming year.
I have admonished people young and old to touch someone’s heart in some way during the holiday season. Now I would like to challenge you all once again. Make sure you tell your children as often as possible that you love them and are proud of the job the are doing or for what they have made of their life to this time. Remember, you can’t change the past, you can live for today with an eye on the future as from this minute forward you can change your life or the life of someone close to you with a sincere, kind word.
After you have done that you can then sit in your rocker or recliner and “Remember When …”
