Savage powers Vikings to pair of pointworthy wins

Caribou hosts Fort Kent on Thursday

Donovan Savage came up big for Caribou twice last week, lifting his team to two upset victories and moving the Vikings into the playoff picture with a month of regular season play still ahead.

The senior guard tossed in 10 fourth-quarter points last Wednesday in a 60-57 home win over then No. 3-ranked Mount Desert Island. He finished with 30 points as Caribou had battled back from a five-point halftime deficit.

On Saturday at CHS, Savage again came up big in the final period by tallying 12 of his 31, including a game-winning 15-footer as time expired, as Caribou surprised No. 1 Orono, 61-59.

Savage was limited to 10 points in Thursday’s 51-38 home loss to Ellsworth, but the Vikings are now 3-4 overall and in seventh place in the Class B North division heading into Thursday’s home game against Fort Kent. The team has another big game Saturday against Washington Academy on the road.

Andre Rossignol scored 14 points and Nick Allen 10 in the win over MDI, while Allen had 12 points and Ricky Sheldon eight against Orono. Sheldon and Rossignol had nine and eight, respectively, in the loss to the Eagles.

The Viking girls stand at 1-6 and near the bottom of the B North rankings after losing all three games they played last week. In a 71-50 loss to MDI last Wednesday, Searra Herbert had 22 points and Gabrielle Marquis 14. The following day, Madison Doucette was the high scorer with 23 points in a 64-41 defeat at the hands of Ellsworth. Caribou was beaten by Orono Saturday, 68-55, as Herbert tallied 15 points, Jenna Boucher had 13 and Doucette netted 12.

Caribou hopes to get back into the win column when it hosts Fort Kent Thursday, with a trip to East Machias to take on Washington Academy looming on Saturday.

The Fort Fairfield boys moved up to third place in Class C North after avenging an early-season loss to the top team in Class D, Easton, on Saturday evening. The Tigers improved their record to 6-3 as Isaac Cyr had 15 points and Chris Giberson 10 in the 48-40 triumph in Easton. Logan Halvorson paced Easton with 17 in a game that stayed close until the final minutes.

FF also recorded a 57-28 win over Central Aroostook last Wednesday. Giberson and Cyr again led the way with 15 and 12, respectively. The Tigers outscored the Panthers, 33-5, over the second and third quarters. Dustin Pryor scored nine for the Panthers.

The Tiger girls are atop the C division thanks to an easy win over Washburn Monday. Taylor Churchill continued her impressive scoring pace with 26 points, while Teresa Maynard had 13 points and 13 boards and Chelsey Pelkey nine points, 11 assists and 11 steals. The Beavers were led by Emilia Churchill, who had 13 points in the game.

The Washburn girls did beat Central Aroostook last Wednesday, 51-37, and Ashland Friday, 43-30, and are in fourth place in Class D with a 5-3 mark. Churchill had 21 in the win over the Panthers and Grace Braley scored 16 more. Against Ashland, Braley had 12, freshman Kassie Farley 11 and Churchill 10.

Kassie Levesque was CA’s high scorer with 14 points, while Laura Sturgeon and Mackenzie Carter had 12 each for Ashland.

The Washburn boys were idle last week and are currently in third place at 5-1. They have road games tonight at Ashland and tomorrow at Limestone, and then get ready to make the trip to Dyer Brook for a pivotal matchup against Southern Aroostook Saturday. Washburn handed No. 2 SA one of its two losses this season on Dec. 16 on the Beavers’ home floor.

The Limestone-MSSM teams returned from a lengthy layoff Saturday with games in Mars Hill against the Panthers. The Eagles girls fell to 1-6 following a 60-29 loss. Kassee Albert had 10 to pace Limestone-MSSM. Alex Sprague tallied 12 points in the boys’ 57-21 loss. The Eagles were outscored 14-0 in the first quarter and trailed 31-3 at halftime.
