Strong winds cause area power outage
CARIBOU, Maine — Numerous residents in the central Aroostook area were among the many who lost their power as a result of strong winds on Sunday night. As a result, Emera Maine utility crews have been making repairs throughout the state.
“The power outage was caused by strong winds and wind gusts,” said Caribou Weather Office Forecaster Mark Bloomer. “As of our latest reports, 212 customers in Aroostook County lost their power on Sunday night.”
According to Bloomer, other areas of the state were hit even harder. 1,100 customers in Hancock County reported power outages, 1,500 were reported in Washington County, and 2,200 were reported in Penobscot County. Pisqataquis, on the other hand, only received 15 reports of power outages.
Bloomer says that, while Caribou might receive some strong winds later in the week, it won’t be as severe as what occurred on Sunday.
“It does look there will be some gusty winds on Wednesday, with blowing drifts of snow,” said Bloomer, “but it probably won’t be as strong as what he just had.”
As of Monday, Emera Maine is addressing roughly 400 repairs from “Deer Isle to Limestone.” Emera stated in an outage report that frigid weather throughout the week may delay repairs.
“We are also closely monitoring a second storm, expected to drop 8-12 inches of snow on the region Tuesday into Wednesday,” the report read. “That, combined with dropping temperatures, will likely make for challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions and could further delay restoration efforts. We appreciate our customers’ patience while we repair the damage, working safely and as quickly as possible.”
