Speed, icy roads lead to two-car crash

BRIDGEWATER, Maine Icy road conditions and an operator driving too fast for those road conditions were cited as factors in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning that injured four people on U.S. Route 1.

According to Maine State Police Sgt. Joshua Haines, Dorothy Holyoke–Cosme, 55, of Houlton and her family were traveling north on Route 1 when her 1998 Nissan Sentra hit a patch of black ice, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.
She then crossed the centerline and struck a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado towing a snowmobile trailer driven by James Small, 51, of Leicester, Mass. Small was travelling southbound at the time.
Holyoke–Cosme had to be extricated from her wrecked vehicle by the Bridgewater and Mars Hill fire departments. Holyoke–Cosme, her husband, Manuel Cosme, and two grandchildren, ages 13 and 10, were taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Haines said. Small was not injured.
HRH spokesperson Janet Vose said Monday that Holyoke-Cosme was transferred to a different medical facility in stable condition, but could not state which hospital under patient confidentiality. Manuel Cosme and the two juveniles were treated and released.
Holyoke–Cosme’s vehicle was demolished as was Small’s snowmobile trailer. Small’s pickup also had extensive damage.
