HOULTON, Maine — When it comes to skiing, Houlton’s Emma Hines is a team of one. Hines, who is graduating from Houlton High School one year ahead of schedule, has been skiing for the Shires for two years. She trains with members of the Central Aroostook squad.
“The Central Aroostook team has always been very welcoming to me so it’s like I’m a part of their team, even though I represent a different school,” Hines said.
At the Lonesome Pine Trails on Saturday in Fort Kent, Hines finished fourth in the Giant Slalom (1:54.7) in the morning competition, and improved upon her time in the afternoon session, finishing the Giant Slalom in 1:51.79, although she still finished fourth. It was her first event of the season.
Hines, who suffers from chronic ankle sprains, said skiing is also one of the few competitive sports she can participate in that does not come with a risk of reinjuring her ankles.
“I enjoy skiing because it’s one of those sports where athletes don’t get so over-competitive that they put each other down. Instead, they encourage their opponents and don’t hold grudges. I also enjoy racing because it’s a great workout, it’s exhilarating and it’s fun.”
