Local cheering squads in midst of busy stretch

The cheerleading competition season officially got underway Saturday for the Presque Isle and Caribou squads as they journeyed to Ellsworth for the Big East Conference championships.

Old Town outdistanced Hermon by a score of 80.6 to 77.3 for first place, with the host Eagles placing third with 74.5.
Presque Isle was sixth with 68 points, while Caribou was ninth of out of the 11 teams participating with a score of 62.1.
Next for both units is Friday’s Aroostook League Championships, which by tradition will be held at Caribou High School.
The actual event begins at 7:05 p.m., but doors open at 6 p.m. and a warm-up period, the national anthem and an exhibition routine by the Aroostook League middle school champion Central Aroostook Panthers will take place prior to the actual competition.
Each of the six teams participating — Caribou, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield Hodgdon, Houlton and Presque Isle — will then perform and be judged.
Awards will be presented in team dance, stunts, motions, jumps and tumbling. The Spirit Award and league runners-up and champions will then be presented to conclude the event.
On Saturday morning, the Wildcats and Vikings head on the bus for Millinocket for the Penobscot Valley Conference championships, set for Stearns High School and beginning at 1 p.m.
