RSU 39 website to feature accomplished graduates
CARIBOU — The National Honor Society has been planning a project that would highlight the accomplishments of Caribou High School graduates. Once the RSU 39 school board approved this project in December, the NHS began taking large steps forward.
The Hall of Fame committee, which consists of CHS students Ben Ezzy, Maria Espinosa and Donovan Savage, has developed a nomination process and evaluation process with the assistance of Lisa Shaw of the Caribou public library and school faculty members Travis Barnes, Lois Brewer, Robert Sprague, Shannon Sleeper and Kenneth Atcheson.
Ezzy created a fully integrated website that allows visitors to vote for a CHS graduate they feel deserves the honor of being part of the Hall of Fame. Former NHS president Anderson Sleeper helped Ezzy create the site along with Michael Gardiner, of RSU 39, who provided technical assistance.
Anyone can reach this website by visiting rsu39.org and clicking the “CHS Hall of Fame” link at the bottom of the left menu. A total of six CHS alumni will receive the honor of being placed in the Hall of Fame each year. The winners will have a poster displayed on the wall along with a quote about what Caribou High School means to them.
Once the votes are cast, a committee consisting of a CHS faculty member, an NHS member, a high school administrator, and two community members will make a final decision. The winners will be announced in April, with the induction ceremony taking place in May 2016.
Caribou NHS President Maria Espinosa says that inspiration for the Hall of Fame came from a trip to a regional convention at Fort Fairfield High School.
“We saw that they had a smaller version of a little tribute to their alumni that made leaps forward in their careers,” said Espinosa. “We thought that we could do something similar with our school, and make an official Wall of Fame, so instead of a traditional sports hall of fame as they have in typical high schools, we want to do something for notable alumni of our school.”
“Traditionally, most high schools have a hall of fame,” said Ezzy, “and some have a graduate hall of fame. Caribou High School has neither. The idea with this project is to create a hall of fame for any graduate who has done anything notable in areas ranging from arts, academia, and athletics. It encompass any achievement in their field.”
