Owl women gain second win
The UMPI women won for just the second time this season, but lost their other three games, while the men dropped both of their contests and are now 7-9 overall.
The women hold a record of 2-15 after beating Vermont Tech last Tuesday but then falling to SUNY-Canton of New York, Simmons College of Boston and Villa Maria of Buffalo.
Amanda Hotham’s 12 points and Sydney Churchill’s 11 led the way in the 72-44 victory over the Knights of Vermont Tech. Megan Jellison had eight rebounds and Holli Boyce ripped down seven more for the Owls.
Hotham’s 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists paced UMPI in the 74-55 loss the following day to SUNY-Canton in day two of the Vermont Tech Winter Classic tourney.
In Thursday’s 70-43 defeat at the hands of Simmons, Hotham again was the top scorer with 13 points.
In Buffalo Sunday, Amanda Allen fired in a career-high 14 points, including four three-point field goals, in a 73-54 loss to Villa Maria. Churchill grabbed nine rebounds for the Owls to lead the way in that department.
On the men’s side, UMPI’s Maurice Harris had 16 points and nine rebounds in Sunday’s 73-71 loss to Villa Maria. Brandon McGill chipped in with 14 points and six boards and Kevin Collins added 13 in the loss. Chase Vicaire contributed 11 points and had eight rebounds.
Two nights earlier, UMPI was stopped by Berkeley College of New York, 78-57. Vicaire fired in 12 points and had seven rebounds, while McGill scored 10 points.
The Owl teams resume play Thursday with a doubleheader at UM-Machias. The women play at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
