CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou High School graduate and Woodland native Sonja Soderberg recently donated $150,000 to the Caribou High School Scholarship Fund. Soderberg’s generous donation is intended for any students who wish to pursue a college degree in any health- or business-related field of study.

While Soderberg now lives in Centerville, Mass., it is clear that she has not forgotten her roots, and her intent is that this donation will help two students each year. Graduating in 1957, Soderberg was the first CHS student to receive a nursing scholarship.

The Caribou High School Scholarship Fund, created in the early 1990s, awards students with scholarships on a yearly basis, and provided a total of $14,800 to 13 members of the CHS Class of 2015. The scholarship fund receives contributions from a plethora of citizens and organizations throughout Caribou, such as the Rotary Club, and Soderberg’s immense donation is making a considerable impact.

“We’re ecstatic that the family of Mrs. Soderberg is giving out this money and being so generous to the students of Caribou High School,” said Caribou Guidance Counselor Mark Pinette, “I don’t think she’s forgotten where she came from. We’re extremely happy that she’s thought of us, and our kids will be forever grateful.”
