100 Years Ago – Jan. 26, 1916
New addition — The Houlton Furniture Co. business which has been conducted by W.F. Buzzell since its organization is to be congratulated upon the fact that Olin B. Rideout has become a member of this well known company. Mr. Rideout is a Houlton boy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Rideout.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 23, 1941
DAR — Miss Catherine Callnan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Callnan, Bangor Road, a senior in the college course at Houlton High School, has been selected as representative of the school as candidate for the Daughters of the American Revolution pilgrimage to the nation’s capital.
Baton Twirlers — Houlton Lions Club presented the Minstrel Musical Revue at Temple Theatre. The show will include a chorus of 25 men and baton twirlers. A special feature during the intermission will include Miss June Tremblay, Maine’s champion baton-twirler from Bangor, with eight especially trained drum majorettes.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 27 , 1966
New addition — A dedication ceremony for the new addition to Houlton High School will be conducted in the new 600-seat auditorium and the open house will follow. Of particular interest will be the entirely new facilities that have been constructed. The auditorium is one, others include: the library, music rooms, cafeteria, home economics department, a second gymnasium, speech laboratory and new locker room facilities.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 23, 1991
All Eastern — Maria Guerin, daughter of John and Nilsa Guerin of Island Falls, has been notified that she has been selected to perform with the All Eastern Band, which will be performing in Pittsburgh. Maria was chosen for the first clarinet section based on her accomplishments as a high school musician.
Firefighters — Two Katahdin High School students have received their Maine Firefighter I certification. Jay Peavey and Garth Pulkkinen have been taking weekly classes in firefighting techniques and regulations since March. Pulkkinen has been a firefighter for two years, Peavey has been with the department for about a year.
