Vicaire reaches 1,000 points in Owl victory
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Chase Vicaire, a senior from Mattawamkeag, scored the 1,000th point of his career and the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls extended their winning streak to three games by downing the University of Maine at Augusta Sunday by a score of 78-54.
The Owls (10-9) jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up. Vicaire scored his first two baskets seven minutes into the game and the second one — a layup following his own steal, put him at the milestone mark.
UMPI’s defense forced UMA (10-11) into 27.4 percent shooting in the contest, and the Moose also committed 16 turnovers as UMPI amassed 11 steals.
Vicaire, Derek Healy and Brandon McGill scored 13 points apiece for the Owls, while Kevin Collins added 11 and grabbed eight rebounds. Frontcourt mate Maurice Harris had a solid game with 10 points and seven boards.
The Owls are currently ranked No. 17 in USCAA Division II. They will host the No. 8 Central Maine Community College on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. UMPI won the first meeting, 80-68.
The UMPI women lost earlier that afternoon, 72-31, as UMA dominated on both ends of the floor.
The Owls played without their leading scorer and rebounder, Amanda Hotham of Fort Fairfield, and some other players who are fighting through injuries. UMPI shot just 22.9 percent from the floor and could not slow down the Moose trio of Jamie Plummer (19 points), Caitlin LaFountain (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Morgan Card (10 points and 11 rebounds).
Janae Libby had eight points to lead the Owls, who fell to 3-17 and will host CMCC prior to the men’s game Saturday at 2 p.m.
