LITTLETON & BANGOR — Gerald L. Duff, 88, died January 19, 2016 in Bangor. He was born October 5, 1927 in Hodgdon, the son of Donald & Olive (Woodcock) Duff.
Gerald led a varied career throughout his life, making friends along the way. He began as a potato farmer in E. Hodgdon, and also worked as a potato inspector. He also became an insurance agent which he continued to do throughout much of his career life. While living in Houlton, he raised beef cattle, the majority of which was sold in Bar Harbor, so it was not unusual to see a pickup heavily loaded heading down I-95 on a crisp October day to deliver the goods. He also worked at the pumping station which supplied fuel for Loring Air Force Base.
One of his favorite jobs was driving school bus, particularly for the girls Houlton High School Varsity Basketball Team. The coach at that time, John Donato, would require that when they won a game everyone (including the bus driver) had to wear the exact same clothes they had worn at the winning game, so as not to jinx anything. He also drove buses to the Special Olympic events, which he greatly enjoyed. Gerald was active at the Littleton Baptist Church, the County Road Baptist Church, and supported the Greater Houlton Christian School. He was on the Board for Living Waters Campground in Danforth for several years, using his own hay equipment to help support the horses which were at the camp. When Gerald and Elaine moved to Littleton, he semi- retired but still dabbled in life insurance, and also worked at the Littleton dump. He enjoyed doing for others, including making his famous fudge for friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine (White) Duff of Littleton & Bangor; his children; Diane Flewelling and her friend, Tommy Reece, of Houlton, Susanne Bridges & her husband, Ralph, of Bangor, and Leanne Linscott of South Carolina; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Audrey Anderson & her husband, Donald, of S. Portland. He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Robert, Carl, and Eugene.
Friends called from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Fri., Jan. 22nd at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water Street, Houlton, where funeral services were held at 1 p.m. with Reverend Steve Straubel officiating.
