PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Cooper Madore scored a power-play goal in overtime Saturday to give Presque Isle a 2-1 victory over Brewer in hockey action at the Forum.
The senior forward’s heroics, which was set up by an assist from freshman Jake Stevens, gave the Wildcats their third win of the season against 10 losses.
With five matches remaining, PI still is in the running for a playoff spot in Class B North. The top seven teams qualify and the Wildcats are less than a point out of the final slot, currently owned by Old Town/Orono.
In Saturday’s contest, Denny Young opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Brewer scored shorthanded to knot things later in the period. After scoreless second and third periods, made possible by several key saves by PI goalie Jillian Flynn and Brewer’s Tyler Friel, Madore found the back on the net in overtime.
“This was the first time all season that we played the entire game, thus eliminating three or four goals being scored on us,” said Wildcat coach Carl Flynn, “and it was a difference-maker in a point-worthy game.”
Flynn saved 30 shots in the match and Friel 24.
On Thursday, PI hosted Waterville in a make-up game originally scheduled Jan. 17 and the Purple Panthers tallied seven goals in the second period en route to the 13-1 victory. Young scored the lone goal for the hosts and Flynn and Andre Daigle shared the goalkeeping chores and faced 36 shots.
Presque Isle hosts Hampden Academy Friday before traveling to play Camden Hills Saturday. The team’s final home game will be Tuesday against the co-op team Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook/Katahdin.
