BANK PLEDGE — Machias Savings Bank in Houlton has pledged $5,000 to the “Other Maine” Project of Aid for Kids. Making the presentation are, from left, Jackie Jones, branch manager; Marilyn Roper and Danette Ellis of Aid For Kids; and Chris Fitzpatrick, executive vice president.

HOULTON — The “Other Maine” Project of Aid for Kids has received a $5,000 grant from the Machias Savings Bank Community Development Foundation. The foundation increased the total amount of funds awarded in 2015 to $50,000.

The “Other Maine” Project’s grant will be used for shipping and handling costs and purchase of goods specifically requested by some of its 120 Non-Profit Distribution Partners and Title I schools, primarily located in northern rural areas of Maine. Approximately $750,000 worth (market value) of new, quality goods are received each year at the “Other Maine” Project’s large Distribution Center in Houlton.

Non-profit distribution partners include food pantries, homeless shelters, DHHS and Pregnancy Care Centers. Helping low-income children/families make ends meet is the goal of the “Other Maine” Project by providing new, free clothes, footwear, diapers, household goods, books and educational toys.

Budget-strapped schools receive school supplies such as pencils, crayons, teaching aids, quality books and small rocking chairs. Through observant teachers in the schools, specific clothing needs of individual children in need are also met.
