115 Years Ago— Feb. 6, 1901

Overhaul — The telephone instruments were being overhauled. When an instrument did not “show up” all right, it was made to do so.

100 Years Ago — Feb. 9, 1916

Soaring prices — The soaring prices in the drug line since the beginning of the war were evidenced yesterday in a local drug store. A five pound bottle of bromide of potassium which the firm purchased about three years ago, sold for $20. They had paid $2.85 for the five pounds before the beginning of the war.

75 Years Ago — Feb. 6, 1941

Leaving the area — Nine young men from the Aroostook No. 2 Selective Service Office, with headquarters in Caribou, left this morning for Portland, where they will be inducted for a year of military training. Of the nine selected, six were from Caribou and one each from Mapleton, East Limestone and Ashland.

$12,000 fur coats — A feature event sure to please the ladies at this year’s Winter Carnival was $12,000 worth of fur coats made from furs trapped in northern Maine and shipped to large buyers and manufacturers in New York.

50 Years Ago — Feb. 9, 1966

Up, up and away — Space enthusiasts of all ages would get a chance on Feb. 25-27 to enjoy an attraction developed for the U.S. Space Park at the World’s Fair in New York in Caribou. It was a full-size Mercury spacecraft like those in which American astronauts John Glenn, Wally Schirra and Scott Carpenter used to orbit the earth.

New business opens — Fischer’s Discount Building Supplies opened last week on the Access Highway. Under construction since late last year, the doors were finally opened as throngs of shoppers arrived to view and purchase from many bargains offered at Fischer’s Discount Building Supply. Attending the ribbon-cutting were Fred Fischer, Fred Fischer Jr., Wilfred Bell, president of the Chamber of Commerce; Kenneth Ginn, chairman of the Town Council; Charles Hatch and Robert Hemingway.

25 Years Ago — Feb. 6, 1991

Census shows drop — Aroostook was the only one of Maine’s 16 counties to lose population during the last decade, U.S. Census figures show. Total Aroostook population including unorganized territories dropped from 91,344 in 1980 to 86,936 in 1990. Caribou and Presque Isle both lost to the tune of 5.6 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.

Desert storm enlists Cary personnel — Operation Desert Storm had made an impact on key personnel at Cary Medical Center. The hospital had lost two clinical professionals, and several other staff members were on upgraded alert status.
