Churches offer food, fellowship, faith

HOULTON, Maine — Beginning at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, the churches of the Southern Aroostook Ministerial Association (SAMA) will once again offer a five-week series of Lenten lunches and short devotional services.  At each host church, a meal consisting of a variety of delicious soups and breads, will be served beginning at noon.  As attendees are finishing their meals, a time of spiritual preparation for Easter will follow, which might include scripture readings, reflections, prayer, music, discussion.

“Food, Fellowship, and Faith” is the overall theme, and the public is cordially invited to attend these gatherings which have been popular in the past two years.  Winter brings the cold and often feelings of isolation.

These meals offer times of warmth, and healthy food, friendly conversations, and words of faith – all to nourish the body and soul.

As an abundance of food will be available at each lunch, folks are encouraged to bring friends and invite others.  (Leftovers will be available to take home as an extra meal.)

While there is no cost for the meals, baskets will be available to receive any donations for The Salvation Army Fuel Fund, which benefits local people in need.

Each meal will begin at noon, and the meal and service will conclude by 12:45 p.m. The five-week schedule is as follows:

Feb. 17 – Church on the Hill (Military Street Baptist Church)

Feb. 24 – St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

March 2 –  First Baptist Church.

March 9 – Houlton United Methodist Church.

March 16 – Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal.
