Man convicted of manslaughter 25 years ago
accused of criminal OUI
HOULTON, Maine — A Mount Desert man convicted 25 years ago of manslaughter after driving drunk and causing the death of a 53-year-old Houlton woman has been indicted on a charge of aggravated criminal operating under the influence.
Troy D. Hastey, 44, of Quarry Road was indicted Thursday by the Aroostook County grand jury, Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said Monday. While details of the recent incident were not released, the indictment states that on Dec. 12, 2015, in Houlton, Hastey “did operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants or while having [a blood] alcohol level of 0.08 or more.”
The charge was elevated to aggravated criminal OUI because of Hastey’s previous conviction for manslaughter involving an accident in which alcohol was involved.
According to Bangor Daily News archives, Hastey, who was 18 at the time, was driving under the influence of liquor at 9:23 p.m. on Jan. 19, 1990, when his 1978 GMC pick-up truck crossed the centerline as he was headed south on North Street in Houlton. The truck hit a 1986 Chevy driven by Ella Grant, who was killed in the collision. Two other northbound vehicles also were involved in the accident after the initial collision, but no one else was injured.
Hastey pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was convicted in May 1991. He was sentenced to seven years in prison with all but two years suspended and four years’ probation.
