Girls basketball squads finish season with a flurry

The regular season is now a fond memory for schoolgirl basketball teams. The Houlton, Southern Aroostook, Katahdin and East Grand/GHCA teams are all headed for the postseason after another successful campaign.

The following is a recap of games played through Feb. 5, 2016.

Houlton 66, Mattanawcook Academy 37 — At Lincoln Thursday, Kolleen Bouchard poured in a game-high 29 points to lead Houlton to victory. Aspen Flewelling added 16 points as the Shires finished the season at 17-1.

Cheyanne Libby led Mattanawcook Academy with 11 points and nine rebounds. Camryn Lyons had seven points for the Lynx (8-10).

Houlton led 15-9, 36-21, and 50-26 at the quarter breaks.

Hodgdon 49, East Grand/GHCA 55 — At Danforth Thursday, on Senior Night, Hodgdon’s Sydney Howell scored a layup at the end of regulation to tie the game, but the Vikings outscored the Hawks, 9-3, in overtime to secure the victory.

Sarah Stoddard led all scorers with 25 points and 15 rebounds to pace the East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian Vikings (8-10). Haleigh Shay chipped in with 14 points while Kim Stoddard added 12.

Howell led the Hawks with 12 points, while Taylor Desrosiers added eight.

The Vikings led 10-6, 22-20 and 30-28 before Hodgdon evened the game at 46-46 at the end of regulation.

Katahdin 55, Southern Aroostook 57 — At Dyer Brook Feb. 2, Kassidy Mathers’ layup with 33 seconds left in overtime proved to be the game-winner as Southern Aroostook topped Katahdin for the second time this season. Mathers and Sydney Brewer each finished with 19 points to lead the 13-5 Warriors.

Makaelyn Porter contributed 10 points.

Courtney Stevens and Georgia Landry led the 9-9 Cougars with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Warriors led 14-12 in the first quarter and 25-23 at the half before the Cougars went up 39-34 after three periods.
