SHERMAN — A Stacyville man wanted for failing to appear in court was arrested last week on additional charges of drug possession and felony trafficking in prison contraband, according to police.

Shawn Kaelin Michaud, 30, was arrested after Maine State Police Trooper John Darcy recognized him when he pulled into the Sherman Irving gas station at about 2 p.m. on Jan. 2. Darcy was aware that there was an outstanding warrant for Michaud’s arrest dating back to a charge of failing to appear in court in 2006, according to a state police press release issued Wednesday afternoon.

The release did not indicate why Michaud was scheduled to appear in court in 2006.

As the trooper approached Michaud to inform him he was under arrest, he saw Michaud discard items onto the passenger seat of the vehicle he was standing next to before Michaud turned around and put his hands behind his back, according to the release.

Darcy reported locating two vials of what later tested positive as methamphetamine in the car.

After Michaud was taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, Darcy also recovered a pill which he saw the suspect try to hide in his mouth, the release states. A further search of Michaud and his clothing allegedly turned up four additional prescription pills and a bottle of methadone. The release did not specify what the prescription pills were.

The trooper charged Michaud with two counts of possession of a Schedule W drug, namely methamphetamine and methadone; one count of possession a prescription medication and felony trafficking in prison contraband.

Michaud was released on bail Wednesday, according to a jail official.
