ROTARY GUEST β€” Lorraine Monfils, left, was the guest speaker at the Houlton Rotary Club Feb. 8. She gave an update on the Ark Animal Sanctuary. With her is Rotarian Kathy Miskelly.

HOULTON — The guest speaker for the Feb. 8, Houlton Rotary Club luncheon meeting was Hollywood Pet Salon owner Lorraine Monfils. Lorraine has been in the dog grooming business for eleven years. Hollywood Pet Salon is located at 70 Main Street in downtown Houlton.

Lorraine is also leading the Ark Animal Shelter which is located at 102 Old Woodstock Road in Houlton. The original building which sat on the 37-acre property unfortunately burned. With assistance from an eighty thousand dollar insurance settlement and bake sales every other weekend the β€œArk” began to rebuild. Other donations have come forward such as $5,000 in memory of Linda Severson and two $1,000 dollar grants that paid for a computer and a washer and a dryer.

The only debt being carried is on the purchase of the property. The building carries no debt. The new building measures 3,000 square feet. There are five 100-square-foot cat rooms inside the building and there is also an area of 100-square-feet providing space for the animals to go outside.

Security cameras and motion detector lights surround the building and a sensor will be installed inside to detect fire or an intruder. The cats that will be housed in the building are to be fostered out to willing owners. Ark Animal Shelter partners with the Cleo Foundation to spay cats. Donations are welcome and can be sent to the Hollywood Pet Salon at 70 Main Street in Houlton.
