100 Years Ago – Feb. 16, 1916
Prize winner — Crystal Waddell, a little 12-year-old Mapleton girl, made a profit of $38.23 on one-tenth of an acre of beets and won sweepstake honors in Girl’s Garden and Canning Clubs, at the State Contest of Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 13, 1941
Bar exam — A Houlton man, Merle C. Rideout, Jr., was among the candidates who successfully passed the Maine State Bar examinations held last week in Bangor. Rideout is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle C. Rideout, Winter Street. He is a graduate of Houlton High School. He studied for two years at Portland Junior College and three years at the Peabody Law School, Portland.
Snow fort — Hours of labor went into the erection of an elaborate snow fort built by Lawrence Michaud, 16, of Hodgdon. He has built several snow houses and forts but this one tops them all. The fort displays the American flag, and inscribed in evergreen boughs are the words, “Uncle Sam, U.S.A., 1941.”
50 Years Ago – Feb. 17, 1966
Contest — Sharon L. Hughes is this year’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Houlton High School. She scored highest here in a written knowledge and aptitude examination taken Dec. 7.
Snow Ball — The Four Seasons, popular TV, radio and recording stars, will be a featured attraction of the annual Snow Ball Weekend scheduled for Ricker College. The group, comprising Frank Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, will make their appearance in Putnam Auditorium.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 13, 1991
Honors — The Patten Woman’s Club decorated the tree in front of the Veterans Memorial Library in Patten with red, white and blue ribbons and red hearts. Each heart carries the name of a local resident currently serving in Operation Desert Storm. The club intends to maintain the tree throughout the duration of the Middle East crisis. Ribbons were made by Christie Crouse of Patten. Fourth-graders at Patten Grammar School cut out the 20 hearts.
